中国相者观察手相首先是对手的形状、线纹、色泽等来确定其五行的属性，所谓五行，即木、火、土、金、水之总称。五行是代表天地间的各种元气，中国的传统观念认为人秉天地元气而生，所以人便具有阴阳五行的属性。但是一个人的元气，不一定是五气皆全，有独得一行之气，有由多气混合而成，或重或轻，形形色色，不一而足，无论如何总离不开五行。所以掌相学家以五行论人，就是从根本着手，若能先察知其人根本所在，那么其人的贤愚、智昧、穷通、怵咎，也就大致有个轮廓了。
